Note from Kenn Holsten

Greetings! I hope this edition of Holsten Galleries News finds you and your family well and that 2013 is off to a good start for you. I have chosen some wonderful works to share with you this month. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions and comments.

Quote of the Month

“While creating each piece, I try to balance the challenges of hot glass with the sense of wonder and fun I felt the first time I gathered glass from the furnace.”

– Nancy Callan

Featured Works

Saba
by Lino Tagliapietra
This elegant piece by Lino Tagliapietra is a classic. The form has an uplifting effect on the viewer. The colors are rich and striking. All of the parts work in balance with each other to create a harmonious whole.

Animal Pin by William Morris
Although most of Morris’s larger pieces have sold in the past several years since his retirement, there are still some very lovely smaller works available. Of those works, this “Animal Pin” is one of my favorites. This pieces captures much of the feeling of the larger, more complex works.

Waimea Waves by Nancy Callan
At first glance, this stunning new piece by Nancy Callan might not be recognized as her work, particularly for those of us who are used to seeing some of her more typical pieces such as the “Top” and “Cloud” series. The form is simple and provides a perfect “canvas” for the surface “painting.” The color combination is bold and the overall feeling for me is quite energetic and joyful.

Ann Robinson, Secondary Market
If you have not visited the Holsten Galleries Secondary Market page recently, you might want to take a look. There are many fine earlier pieces available. Many of these are by very recognizable glass artists such as Chihuly, Morris, etc. Others, like this piece by Ann Robinson, are by artists that some of you may not be familiar with. I like the sculptural lines of this piece and the simplicity of form. To me it has a serene and yet a very inviting quality.

Ginger Plum Seaform by Dale Chihuly
Studio Edition
One of my favorites of the earlier Dale Chihuly Studio Editions that are still available is this “Ginger Plum Seaform.” The form is classic Chihuly and the beautiful color combination is somewhat unique in Dale’s work. For me there is a rich and elegant feeling in this gem of a smaller piece.

Thank you. Stay well and keep in touch!
