Note from Kenn Holsten

Greetings! One of the most rewarding aspects of my 35 years of selling glass is the personal relationships I’ve formed with both collectors and artists. At least a few of you who are reading this letter have been my clients since the early 1980’s; that’s 30 years! And several of the artists I represent have also been working with me for 25 to 30 years. This would include Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra, Dan Dailey, Marvin Lipofsky, Paul Stankard, Jon Kuhn, Steven Weinberg and William Morris, who is now retired. It’s been such a pleasure to watch the studio glass movement grow over three decades and equally enjoyable getting to know so many wonderful people who either make or collect glass (and a few who fit into both categories).

Quote of the Month

“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

– Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso

Featured Works

This month I have chosen to feature some great new works by several of my favorite artists. I hope you enjoy them and have an opportunity to visit their web pages to see more of their work. As always, I welcome your comments and questions.

Fuji by Lino Tagliapietra
This piece (or actually this image) just came to me today. Because Lino Tagliapietra has chosen to create a more traditional vessel form here, the viewer can focus more fully on the intricacy of the lacy cane work and the strips of alternating colors.

Haystack Fog by Kait Rhoads
I love this piece by Seattle based glass artist Kait Rhoads. Understated elegance are the words that comes to mind to describe the subtle zanfirico cane work and the clear murine of this minimalistic piece.

Strawberry Mosaic Top by Nancy Callan
Nancy offered me two beautiful examples of her "Top" series for the newsletter. It was very difficult to choose which one to include here so please do also look at her "Tidal Pool Top" on her web page. My experience of Nancy’s work is that it gets more beautiful year after year.

Raven Steals the Moon by Preston Singletary
Here is a wonderful example of one of Preston’s signature series. "Raven Steals the Moon" has narrative reference to one of the classic myths of Singletary’s native Tlingit culture.

Saffron Seaform Pair by Dale Chihuly
2013 Studio Edition
This 2013 Studio Edition continues the tradition of one of Chihuly’s earliest signature series, the "Seaforms." The colors here are rich and vibrant and the form prototypical of the series.

I hope you are all in good health and enjoying your summer. Please stay in touch!
