Frantisek Vizner Biography

What strikes one first about Frantisek Vizner's work is that, even though the forms are sparse, they communicate a great mysteriousness and complexity, as if they were the anthropological remnants of a mythic story. Author William Warmus once wrote that, "This good work is a heartfelt meditation over the origins of things, both those veiled in the depths of time and those born from human industry. [Vizner says] that he puts as much time into creating an object as 'its life will last,' which I gather means that time endows wisdom." Vizner, who has devoted the last 57 years to mastering his craft, works alone (an exceedingly rare thing in the contemporary glass world) and makes by hand each vessel on the grindstone in his home studio. Vizner's work can be found all over the globe, including such prestigious collections such as those in the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and in museums throughout Germany and Vizner's native Czech Republic. Vizner has participated in over 150 exhibitions throughout his career.
